Mathematics Education:
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Northern
Michigan University invites applications for a tenure-track position
in Mathematics Education at the rank of Assistant Professor
beginning in fall, 2009. The successful applicant must possess an Ed.D. or a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education or related field, and
should have K-12 teaching or supervisory experience. ABD's will be
considered if substantial progress toward completion of the
degree has been made prior to employment. (An ABD would be hired at
the Instructor level pending completion of the terminal degree.)
Applicants with specialized interests in any level of
Mathematics Education are encouraged to apply. Experience or
interest in teaching on-line is desirable.
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Northern
Michigan University prepares students for professional careers in
mathematics, mathematics education, and computer science, while
providing service and liberal studies courses for the broader
university community. The department offers bachelor's degrees in
mathematics, mathematics education, and computer science, and a
Master of Science degree in mathematics education. In addition, the
department contributes to the professional development and
continuing education of K-12 mathematics teachers in the region. The
department faculty includes five mathematics educators among a
professorial staff of twenty-two. The secondary mathematics
education program is housed in the department; mathematics educators
also teach mathematics content and methods courses for elementary

Northern Michigan University is a comprehensive institution of over

Northern Michigan University invites
nominations and applications for a position as head of the
Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The department,
with twenty-two full-time faculty members, offers undergraduate
programs in mathematics, computer science, and mathematics
education, and provides service and liberal studies for the broader
university community. A master's program in mathematics education
is offered, and a graduate program in modern applied mathematics is
being developed. Exceptional benefits and a competitive salary are

The candidate must have an earned doctorate in one of the
department's disciplines (mathematics, computer science, or
mathematics education), a solid record of successful college
teaching, and a strong record of scholarly/creative research and
publication sufficient for appointment as full professor with
tenure. The candidate must provide evidence of effective
administrative, interpersonal, and communication skills, and have
experience in program development. The multidisciplinary nature of
the department has long been one of the department's strengths.
Accordingly, the candidate is expected to have broad interests in
the fields of mathematics, computer science, and mathematics
education. Since NMU is a laptop university, the candidate should
have a strong interest in exploring online teaching and the use of
technology in the learning environment by faculty and students.
Responsibilities will include teaching courses in area of expertise,
leading an active research program, representing the department to
the administration and public, working with the Dean to achieve
fundraising goals, and overseeing the daily operations of the
department.
Northern Michigan University is a comprehensive institution of
