Boreal Owl in the U.P.

Aegolius funereus

This secretive little owl is probably here, on passage, each year (it’s banded nearly every year at Whitefish Point). But still, it’s rarely seen by birders; in my opinion, it’s the toughest to see of the regularly occurring birds of the North. Wait for a major irruption year, like 2006, and then follow the postings on the U.P. birdnet listserve.
