Common Redpoll in the U.P.
Acanthis flammea
Most winters theyÕre here; some winters theyÕre
not. A not uncommon pattern for this species is for them to spend the first
part of the winter foraging in the woods, and then by January or February, to move
into town and take advantage of the many bird feeders well stocked with niger
thistle. The easiest way to see this species is to stake out bird feeders where
theyÕve been seen.
