Common Redpoll in the U.P.

Acanthis flammea

 

 

Most winters theyÕre here; some winters theyÕre not. A not uncommon pattern for this species is for them to spend the first part of the winter foraging in the woods, and then by January or February, to move into town and take advantage of the many bird feeders well stocked with niger thistle. The easiest way to see this species is to stake out bird feeders where theyÕve been seen.
