Great Gray Owl in the U.P.

Strix nebulosa

This bird is probably a year round resident, with strong evidence of regular breeding (in and near Seney National Wildlife Refuge). The locations of breeding pairs are closely guarded secrets, though, so it’s best to see this species in the U.P. during those winters when they’re here in decent numbers. Best places are the Soo and Whitefish Point.
