Northwestern Crow
Corvus brachyrhynchos
caurinus
First view, Seward, Kenai Peninsula Borough,
Alaska, 27 May 2021.
Another view, the former ÒNorthwestern CrowÓ,
across the street from the Red Lion Hotel, Jantzen Beach, Portland, Oregon, 14
June 2018; crummy photo with my iPhone. Here are my comments about this bird
when I posted them, back when this was considered a species: This is most
likely one of the very few ÒcontroversialÓ photos on my website. Some experts
say that this species can be reliable identified only by range, and Portland is
just south of the (usually) accepted range. On the other hand, this was a very
small crow whose voice was identical to Northwestern Crow, but substantially
different from American Crow. It also responded to the Northwestern Crow call
on my IPhone (as it is doing in this photo), but ignored the American Crow call
on my iPhone. If this is not a Northwestern Crow, then perhaps Northwestern
Crow is not a genuine species.
