Topology is the study of properties that are invariant to bending, stretching and twisting. As long as one does not cut, tear or glue, one preserves the topology. In this sense it is the study of qualitative properties of objects - rather than their quantitative ones.
Aside from being incredibly interesting, topology serves the foundations of analysis & geometry.
