L. Ron. Hubbard and the ISPs
What Dennis Elrich Did

He posted to alt.religions.scientology sections from a religiously important book that the church has successfully claimed was a trade secret.  he admitted doing it.

What Netcom Did

Netcom facilitated the postings, without detailed knowledge of them.  Netcom treated these posts like any other user posts.

What The Church for Scientology Did

Sued both Elrich and Netcom.

The Outcome
Elrich pays the church $50,000 without admitting guilt.  Judge ruled that Netcom could be held guilty only if Netcom had knowledge of the user's infringement.  Netcom was held innocent.
