Network Based Attacks

Definition:  Attacks from across the network.

Difficulty Rating:  Varies

Methods:

Idea:  Ping flood the target.
Problem: It's distructive at both ends.  Requires you to have a big connection to the internet.  Can be traced.  Long boring meeting with department head.

Idea:  (Smurf) Send a ping packet with a reply address.  Watch buggy O.S. do stupid things.
Problem:  Too many packet filters.  People upgrade the O.S. (slowly).  Only works as long as you keep sending.  Can be traced.
Bonus:  At least it doesn't hurt your end of the connection.

Idea:  (Teardrop) Send an impossibly long ping packet.  Watch buggy O.S. crash.
Problem:  Packet filters.  Most O.S.'s (except Win95) have been upgraded.
