COURSE ANNOUNCEMENTS (Wednesday, March 29, 2017)
What's REALLY
New:
- HW6 was assigned Tuesday (yesterday).
Due next Thursday, April 6, 2017 (in class; a solution will be
handed out then) . Details below.
- Quiz
3 will be in class this Thursday, March 30, 2017. It will
be on Gauss-Jordan Elimination, which means HW5 material. I
will have a bit more information on Q3 later today. In the
meantime you should study the solution to HW5 which was handed out in
class on Tuesday. There are hardcopeis of the solution in
the handout cabinet outside of JXJ 2110, and the pdf is available below, under HW5.
- HW5 solution (scanned into a pdf file) is available below.
What WAS
New (Old announcements never die! They go here.):
- HW5 was assigned last week. Due end of this week. Details below.
- You should consider submitting a project to The Celebration of Student Scholarship. At the very least, you should check it out by attending some sessions. Usually there are refreshments!
- Topic Test 1 is on this Thursday (March 2, 2017) in class. Details in the Test 1 Guide, below.
- Quiz 2 solution, pdf file, added below.
- HW3 solution, pdf file, added below.
- I managed, finally, to upload the BestFitLine
(Linear regression) spreadsheet (that I had emailed to you for Quiz
2). The link to it, from Quiz 2 below, is now working. You might find it useful for Test 1 on Thurs.
- Quiz 2 will be in class this coming Thursday, Feb. 23, 2016. See below for details.
- HW 4 due date is moved to next Tuesday, Feb. 28,
in class, but if you want it graded over this coming weekend, then
submit it to me by the end of this week. See HW4 below for more details...
- Educat has been updated with the correct grades
for H!, HW2, HW3, and Quiz1. Please check your
grades. Basic statistics (range and avg. of each grade
item) should show.
- Here is our schedule for the next few
weeks: Spring Break starts end of next week, which means
Sat. March 4 (yay). But before then we must finish:
HW4,Quiz 2, and Topic Exam 1 (yay). HW4 will be due next
Tuesday. Quiz 2 will be this Thursday, and Topic Exam
1 will be next Thursday (March 2) in class. More
information to follow.
- Extra hardcopies of class handouts, including
HW4, solutions to HW1, HW2, and Quiz1, are now in the "handout monster"
(metal cabinet) just outside the door of the NERL (robotics lab) in
2110 JXJ (this is at the end of the short hallway off of the second
floor Jamrich atrium lounge, which I call the "terrace
lounge." The glass-walled Cluster Lab is on the corner of
this little hallway...
- HW 4 is assigned. Due end of the week. See below.
- Quiz 1 will be Thursday, 2-16-17, in class. More information is below.
- Solutions to HW1 and HW2 are now online, below under each homework item.
- HW3 is assigned. Due next Thursday (Feb. 9, 2017). See below.
- HW2 is due in class today. (Solution to be handed out today, Th. 2-2-2017.) See below.
- Tutor Lab Schedule is now available. Link is below under "Administrativa"
- HW1 assigned. See below.
- Welcome to class!
- This is where old announcements will go, so that
you won't miss any news!

LECTURE
NOTES
HOMEWORKS
- HW 1:
- HW 2:
- HW 3: Lines and Graphs
- This one is out of the book! (which means that the
answers to adjacent (odd-numbered) problems, which are available,
should be helpful!)
- Section 1.1, p. 6: (#12, 14); p. 7: (#16, 18, 20, 22, 36, 38, 42, 46, 50, 60, 62, 70, 72).
- Show work for partial credit but clearly indicate a unique final answer! (e.g., circle it, put a box around it, etc.)
- HW3 solution here.
- HW 4: Systems of Equations and Inequalities
- DUE: Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017 IN CLASS!
(There will be a solution available in class, so no late submissions
(that is, after the solution is handed out) will be accepted.)
- Also,
if you want to have HW4 graded by me over the weekend and returned to
you on Tuesday (Feb. 28) then you must submit your HW4 by the end of
Friday, March 1 (this week). I will be in the office Friday night
to pick up anything submitted under my door or in my Dept. mail cubby.
- HW4
material will be on next week's Topic Exam on Thursday.
This is why I am offering to grade early submissions over the weekend
and also why I plan to provide a solution on Tuesday.
- click here for the pdf file.
Hardcopies can be found in the "handout monster" (metal cabinet)
outside of the robotics lab (JXJ 2110) off the 2nd floor atrium
"terrace" lounge.
- HW 5: Gauss-Jordan Elimination
- DUE: Friday, March 24, 2017.
- Solution here.
- HW 6: General Systems of Linear Equations
- DUE: Thursday, April 6, 2017 IN CLASS (solution will be handed out then, so no late submissions!)
Quizzes
- Review Quiz/Survey (not graded)
- Quiz
1:
- In class Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017,
open book, open notes. You may use "technology" as in
calculators, computers, software, web-based systems, Wolfram Alpha,
etc. BUT you must do your own work!
- Topic of quiz 1 is the first part of chapter 1 of our text, which means
mostly section 1.1, which was also the focus of HW 3.
- Here is an example quiz 1. And here is the solution to it.
- Quiz 2:
- In class Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017,
open book, open notes. You may use "technology" as in
calculators, computers, software, web-based systems, Wolfram Alpha,
etc. BUT you must do your own work!
- Topic of quiz 2 is the Least Squares Lines (linear regression) which is Section 1.5 of our text.
- Quiiz2 will give you three (x,y) data points and ask you to
find a best fit line for them using linear regression. You should
use technology (as ou
textbook calls it!) to do this. If you missed class this past
Tuesday, don't worry; I'll be explaining it again in clas for the quiz
on Thursday.
- Here are examples of technology you may use:
- A graphing calculator.
- A spreadsheet. Here
is one that you can easily use. Just plug your three data
points into the spreadsheet, specifically the salmon-colored cells on
the left side. The BestFitLine
spreadsheet will then calculate the best fit line two ways: one
by the formulas given in section 1.5 of the book, and the other using
Excel's built-in "Trendline" chart. Both will show you the
slope and y-intercept.
- Wolfram Alpha (www.wolframalpha.com). Section 1.5 of
our book shows how to use this. For example, if the three
data points are (1,7),(9,4),(3,8) then type in "linear fit
(1,7),(9,4),(3,8)" and Alpha will show you the equation of the best fit
line, plot it, and even show you the squared errors (what Alpha calls
"residuals" and the book calls "E").
- The quiz will ask you to write down various data from the
regression, such as: equation of the line (e.g., slope and
intercept), total error (that is sum of the three E2 values), a plot of the best-fit line, etc.
- I will be there to provide assistance during the quiz. (This
material is new and the quiz format somewhat like a class exercise!)
- You need to learn this material. It will be on HW5 but more urgently it will be on next week's Topic Exam!
- And here is the solution to Quiz 2.
- TOPIC TEST 1
- To be held in class on Thursday March 2, 2017. Guide to the test is here.
