Specialty Species of the U.P.

On this page, you will find my (perhaps quirky) list of U.P. specialty species, as well as links to photos IÕve made of (most of) these species. For an explanation of ÒWhat is a U.P. specialty species?Óclick here. Please note that many of these species are seasonal, e.g., you wonÕt find Yellow Rail in the U.P. in January; you wonÕt find Northern Hawk Owl in July; ThayerÕs Gull is most likely in spring and fall; and so on. Moreover, the seasonal species arenÕt here every year. For instance, some winters we have piles of redpolls, while theyÕre largely absent during other winters. So check the U.P. birdnet listserve before any trip to the U.P.—we have an active birding community up here; if good birds are being seen, there will be postings.
